Besides morning sickness, the second most problem I hear about from pregnant women is indigestion. I remember having it myself during both pregnancies. Most say it occurs because you’re having a baby with lots of hair. I’m not sure how true that is, but the real reason we experience indigestion while pregnant is due to the hormone progesterone. Progesterone helps relax the muscles during pregnancy, which includes the stomach valve that keeps acid out of to the esophagus. As the uterus grows, it crowds the stomach, which forces acid into the esophagus.
So how can you help prevent this from happening? Well, it’s much easier than you think. Try these three simple tips to help reduce or eliminate your indigestion.
1. Try Ginger
Ginger is know for its fighting power on an upset stomach, but this spice can also get rid of nausea and vomiting- side effects of indigestion. Try drinking ginger ale, ginger candies, adding it to your tea, or having a few slivers of it cut fresh from the ginger root.
2. Drink Aloe Vera
Most aloe vera juices are not that tasty, but my favorite tasteless version is George’s 100% Aloe Vera. Drink an ounce in the morning before you eat and an ounce before you go to bed at night. Not only will it help reduce indigestion, but also any stomach discomfort.
3. Slow Down & Take A Stand
Don’t rush through your meals. Take your time, take it slow and enjoy your food. After you eat, stand up or take a walk. Avoid bending over or lying down after you eat. That will only cause the acid to travel up your esophagus easier.
Ladies, don’t let indigestion keep you down. Use these suggestions to help with any discomfort you may be having. This should be a happy relaxing time. Do what you can to alleviate anything that gets in the way of that. Be happy, be healthy!
